Artist's Statement:

I love to play with geometry and color. I have been exploring the hexagon for fifteen years and still have many ideas and concepts to explore. With my masters degree in architecture I am fascinated with the built environment. This is currently demonstrated by the abstracted forms inside the bounding box of the hexagon. I have developed a vocabulary of five pattern pieces that I can use for sky, water, land, and buildings all by changing the pattern and color of the fabric pallet. This set of patterns is flexible beyond my initial assumptions. Interest is added by violating a pattern to create a single unique deviation. This exploration is currently following a theme of an idealized Maine landscape.

The use of the computer in designing my work and creating unique designs on fabric is an ongoing exploration since 1990. My first images on fabric were done in 1991 with the assistance of the local copy shop and their t-shirt printing equipment. This wall hanging was donated to the Chocolate Church Center for the Arts and sold at their benefit auction in 1993.

Right now my new environment of the Maine landscape forms the inspiration for my current work. The work shown in the gallery section covers a wide range of time but it also demonstrates the flexibility on some of the design elements I have chosen to explore. It also includes a few deviations from the path. Some of theses such as the piece “Mirroring the Future” will provide the basis for future exploration. “Geo Twist” is a lighter fun piece where I have picked parts from several standard quilting blocks and just play with further modifications of the geometry and color. I am currently working on a new variation and includes dancing figures entering and leaving the center.

While this site includes only my art quilts, the same forms also appear in my computer art, jewelry designs and my oil paintings. I work in several disciplines but the vocabulary of form and color remains consistent. Getting my art degree as an adult was a positive experience and I continue to take workshops and classes as I can fit them in my schedule and budget.
