Villa Altamira

and the island of Vieques

Description of Altamira

From the moment we first came to Vieques twelve years ago we realized that the island was a special place...much like most of the other islands were decades ago (safe, unspoiled and with few tourists)--we knew that we wanted a home of our own here. Villa Altamira is the result of two years of planning and construction by Altamira's first owners. They invested a lot of energy, love and effort in order to create a home that is truly special. We are pleased to share it with you.

Lazy Pool Lizard

Vieques is a special, tranquil island. None of the crowds, noise or extreme shopping that have spoiled much of the Carribean Islands just the perfect blend of natural beauty and solitude that are hard to come by these days. Unexpected visitors are sometimes a problem...a stray horse or a lonely iguana. They don't mean any harm . You may see some wild horses at some beaches...or in the backyard if you forget to close the gate. Villa Altamira is a great home base from which to enjoy the Island's treasures. Vieques is not for everyone though. No casinos, shopping, loud music, traffic, nightclubs or high energy nightlife. This is an island for peaceful relaxation, reflection, exploring nature while you discover new beaches, walking the island's cute towns of Isabella and Esperanza. Fish the island's coast, dine at one of the many fine restaurants but most of all discover the joy of relaxing poolside or on the balcony reading or chatting with family and friends. Look for the friendly neighborhood iguanas who visit Altamira or Five toes the cat who will likely stop by to welcome you. The spectacular views are the perfect backdrop for your leisure time at Altamira.

Our idea of the perfect vacation is enjoying late morning breakfast followed by a visit to the beach. A different beach everyday Red Beach, Navio, Yellow Beach, ....If we don't drive to the main beaches, we often walk (10 min.) down to "La lanchita" a little cove near the house which is frequently deserted. In the evening we often walk into the village of Isabella Segunda (15 minutes) to wander around the plazas or to visit an ice cream parlor. At times it's like having a holiday in Spain! Vieques is one of the few islands that we know of where you really feel safe to walk anywhere at night. (violent crime is nearly non existent.) Besides, the smell of jasmine is enough to lure you outside anyway! It is an easy 20 min. flight from the airport in San Juan (about 60 dollars) to the new airport on Vieques. You will be met at the airport or ferry by our agent and taken to the villa. Our agent can also arrange for a rental car to be at the house for you. The house has everything you need-- even books and towels. Just bring shorts, T shirts, bathing suits, and your favorite CD's!

Widlife Refuge

A more recent development has been the transfer of the former US Navy Base on Vieques to the Federal Department of Fish and Wildlife. This has opened up thousands of undeveloped acres and more beautiful beaches to the public. What this means is that visitors have daily unobstructed access to the island's best beaches and can explore endless dirt trails that lead to many quaint and deserted beaches. When the base was open access was often limited.

Swimming Cove

This is a good time to reserve before we are completely booked out. Several of our guests have already rebooked for next year. An early request is to your advantage. A deposit will hold your dates.

We hope that you enjoy Villa Altamira as much as we do and that you will return more than once.

Sharing couples, families and children welcome!
