Team Matero returns to Winner's Circle

The Seventh Annual Joe Merrill Invitational Golf Classic is in the books, and Team Matero captured it's second championship after a six-year wait.  The Materos, perpetual runners-up who had earned the unofficial nickname "Team Bridesmaid", were once again led by the steady play of Tim and David Matero, with fine performances by third-year sidekick Greg Day and new addition Jim Harford helping to lead the way.  Team Matero's score of 157 was five shots better than two-time champion Team Higgins, which had previously been undefeated with the lineup entered for this year.  One shot back was the entry of the tournament organizer, Team Merrill, which was unable to sink enough putts to make a serious run at the title.  The Collins, Bass, Ward, and Fournier entries rounded out the field.  First-time entrant Ed Piirainen of Team Ward captured the coveted Drig Fournier Cup with a 75, while Cheri Tate of Team Bass was the low women's entrant at 106.  Click here for the full story, and check out the updated tournament Record Book.

2002 Recap

Read here to relive the Sixth Annual Joe Merrill Invitational. Team Higgins reunited the championship entry from the 2000 tournament and it proved to again be a winning formula - the Higgins brothers, plus two good golfers.   Again, strong play from the two ringers led to a tourney record 151 and a convincing seven-stroke victory.  The new venue, Bath Country Club, was well received by the participants and provided ideal scoring conditions leading to new entries in the all-time Record Book.  The absence of Drig Fournier (which led to the lack of serious competition from the defending champion Team Merrill), led to Drew Turnbull of Team Higgins walking away with the trophy for the low score in the tournament.  Click here for the full story.  There was a brief furor over alleged steroid use by the tournament organizer (read about the allegations here), however the allegations proved unfounded and the scandal died out quickly.

Congratulations to Team Higgins: Joe Merrill (following tradition by weaseling into another championship photo), David Matero, Tim Matero, Greg Day, Jim Harford.
