The
Merrymeeting Community Band was founded in the summer of 1992 by
Margery Landis with one concert on the Mall in Brunswick, Maine. In
1993 Margery was approached by the Board of Directors of the inactive
Brunswick Town Band. They were pleased to see a community band once
again in the area and changed the Brunswick band's name to The
Merrymeeting Community Band, enabling the group to share resources and
retain the original corporation. For several years the band performed
year round with benefit concerts in December and April, but now
performs during the summer months only.
The Merrymeeting Community Band can
be characterized by diversity. The band's repertoire consists of
various types of music; its adult members represent varied professions,
a range of musical experience, and are residents of towns covering a
wide area surrounding Brunswick and the Merrymeeting Bay (for which we
are named). The band is multigenerational, with our youngest members
entering the seventh grade. We pride ourselves in the many combinations
of siblings, parents, and grandparents playing together to form our
band.
Our season begins with the
Brunswick/Topsham Memorial Day Parade and we perform in a variety of
venues throughout the summer, including the Brunswick Mall, the Bath
Gazebo, and the Bowdoinham Gazebo. The season ends with performances
during Celebrate Bowdoinham Days in September. New members are always
welcomed and band students entering grade seven and older are invited
to join. We all look forward to the day when our schedules ease up and
afford us the opportunity to perform again throughout the year.
